New Forest Camping – Ancient Woodland & Heathland
The New Forest is one of the most distinctive camping destinations in England. A national park of ancient oak and beech woodland, open heathland, and meandering streams, with over 3,000 free-roaming ponies, cattle, and deer wandering freely across the landscape and through the campsite boundaries. It’s camping in a genuinely wild setting, just a short drive from the south coast.
The New Forest sits across Hampshire, with edges spilling into Wiltshire and Dorset. The market towns of Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst sit at its heart, with the Solent coast and the New Forest’s quieter western fringe beyond.
Best Areas to Camp in the New Forest
Brockenhurst and the Central Forest – The heart of the national park, where the ancient woodland is deepest and the ponies most visible. Brockenhurst village has a good selection of shops, pubs, and cafes, and is well connected by train from London. Pitches here feel genuinely immersed in the forest rather than adjacent to it.
Burley and the Western Forest – The village of Burley sits in open heathland on the western edge of the national park, with a quieter, more rural feel than the central sites. Good for cycling into the forest on the miles of waymarked trails.
Fordingbridge and the Northern Forest – The northern reaches of the New Forest, bordering the Avon valley. Quieter and less visited than the Brockenhurst area, with good access to the river and the Rockbourne Roman Villa nearby.
The South and the Solent Coast – The forest’s southern edge meets the Solent, with campsites near Lymington and Beaulieu offering a combination of woodland setting and coastal access. Beaulieu Motor Museum and Palace House are nearby.
Things to Do
The New Forest’s cycling network is one of the best things about it, over 100 miles of traffic-free and waymarked trails make it a brilliant destination for families on bikes. Bikes can be hired from several points in Brockenhurst and Burley. On foot, the forest and heathland tracks are easy going and navigable for all ages, with the ponies, deer, and cattle adding a genuine sense of wildlife encounter.
Beaulieu Motor Museum is one of Hampshire’s biggest visitor attractions and houses the National Motor Museum alongside Palace House. The New Forest Show in late July is the county’s largest annual outdoor event. Lymington’s Saturday market and its quay are worth a stop on the southern edge of the forest, and the ferry to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight runs from Lymington year-round.
